It was only after making this cartoon that the possibility occurred to me that no one has used "potted" as a synonym for drunk since William Powell and Myrna Loy in the Thin Man films of the 1930's.

Johnny, on the other hand, gets the joke because he loves watching Turner Classic Movies.

Turner Classic Movies and World Cup ski racing, pretty much all we watch on the tube. And the Thin Man movies are truly classics. Johnny is wise beyond his years.

By the way, check out the TCM big screen series. We've seen The Third Man, Dr. Strangelove, The Shining, From Here to Eternity all on the big screen this year. Looking forward to North by Northwest, the Graduate and more this year.

@TrickyRicky- I consider TCM to be one of my few "must have" channels. And I haven't gone to the big screen showings (being a social recluse), though it would be fun to see these films shown the way they were meant to be seen. By the way, in North by Northwest there's a pivotal scene with a gunshot in a tourist lodge near Mount Rushmore - if you watch carefully, there's a kid with his back to the action who covers his ears with his hands BEFORE the gun is fired. I'll bet Hitchcock could have strangled him (and perhaps did) once he discovered it.

If this lady "stuffed" a basketball, would that be a "slammed dunk"?
Considering clichés for drunkeness, is "3 sheets to the wind" from Columbus' era? How about "hammered", "plowed", "tipsy", "snockered", "blotto", "bombed", "gassed", "pickled", "pissed" (British), "plastered"... well, there are a plethora of others, but time...

Pissed as a fart, as I learned to say it.

I suspect you're correct, Stilt, and "potted" would be a slightly different form of 'intoxicated'....
In the Detroit area, they've restored (nearly completely, I think) the Redford Theater, and they have 'classic' movies every other weekend, and organ performances before hand (hush yo moufs - a Theater Organ, w/ pipes, and sound effects, and stuff - git outta my gutter). I think they even play a silent movie, on occasion, w/ organ accompany...
Heartily recc'd to any in the area.

Ohhh! They're having a Debbie Renolds / Carrie Fisher double feature tribute next week!

I hope Johnny remembers not to drink the water while TCM replays The Treasure of the Sierra Madre.
