@John Robert Mallernee- It took Mrs. Jarlsberg a moment to figure this one out, too. Basically, there's no homily with the word "doornail" other than "dead as a doornail," which gives us some insight into what kind of pleasantries this old gal is stitching.

I just Googled it, and it refers to the phrase, "Dead as a doornail".

LOL. Good stuff Stilton. I like to imagine what other embroideries of hers likely say:
- "Soon to be dead as a doornail"
- "Here's hoping your life insurance is paid up"
- "Sucks to be you"
...and other warm, loving messages for Johnny and his friends. :-)
@qdpsteve- I'm glad to say that this sweet old soul and her questionable embroideries will be returning in future cartoons.
Reminds me of a scene from the movie "Foul Play" involving two old ladies and the game "Scrabble".
