Sorry there wasn't a cartoon on Wednesday - we got hit by the Great Texas Freeze of 2021 and didn't have Internet, electricity, or heat. I felt a lot like that brass monkey!

  1. Those of us living in “Hurricane Alley” can certainly emphasize. Hoisting a Sam Adams Boston Lager to you and your household, Stilt. (What, too early?)

  2. Photos from my cousin in Fort Worth are incredible. Glad you are returning to normal operations, especially in the heating and utilities department!

  4. One cold Winter's eve in Cleveland, Ohio, "Wally Kinnan the Weatherman" reported in North Dakota it was going to be around -40 F or C overnight, and told his audience, "there'll lots of brass monkeys singing soprano tomorrow in North Dakota!" Would that be more-accurately described as "castrato"?

  5. I once heard of a weatherman who simply advised viewers to bring their brass monkeys inside one night. No explanation necessary...

  6. Jeep - heard of a weatherman who was wrong so badly, and so often that he got fired. During an interview, he was asked why he left his previous position. "The climate didn't agree with me"

TruFact (as I understand it) - a Brass Monkey is the plate used to hold the bottom layer of a pyramid of cannon balls. being brass, it expands / contracts with temperature at a different rate the balls. at at certain point, I think about 10F for 4" balls, it is no longer large enough to hold the balls, and the pyramid collapses. Ergo, the phrase.
As always, I may be mis-informed, but it makes sense.

  7. @Readers- Next, we'll look into the fascinating etymological history of "Cold as a witch's tit." (It's the drooping wooden handle grasped to dispense ale in English pubs. Or is it..?)

  9. And then maybe ‘dryer than a popcorn fart’?

  10. Do we need to investigate the origin of "colder than a well-digger's a$$"?

  11. @DougM- Actually, I made up the story about the witch's tit. Sounds plausible though, doesn't it? (grin)

@Bobo- You've reminded me of a classic joke for those who (used to) work in an office: just after you fart, you say "hey, is someone making popcorn?" so that those around you will sniff.

@JustaJeepGuy- In this case, the "ass" was the burro, donkey, or mule used to transport the well-digger. This is also where we got the phrase "Burro zero."
