A couple guys I knew in the Navy were bored one day, so they found something to do... Their ship was in the yard and they were quartered on a barge. There was a window on the barge. The window was open and had brackets on the sides, like arms, that would hold an inner tube. There were seagulls flying by the window and potatoes available. An stretched inner tube makes a great slingshot, a potato makes a great projectile, and gulls make great targets. Need I say more?

They were going to use the birdies to play badminton, but it raised too much of a racquet..
That's the sound they make when you hit 'em with a baseball bat, too.

Or a potato. (there's an old/long Navy story there...)
@Stan da Man- So the net result was they canceled the game?
@Wahoo- Unless it's a whiffle bat. Then it's more of a "thonk!"
@JustaJeepGuy- Are you talking about hitting potatoes with a bat, or hitting birds with potatoes? Either way, probably a good story.
@Stilt,

@JustaJeepGuy, reminds me of a true story (as I heard it) of clubbing/shooting rats on Adak.
